After contributing to our “Rude Haus 2012 - Forever” compilation, Spurz steps into the light with his debut EP ‘Spirit Functions’. Angular, punishing drum workouts serve as a the record’s foundation, which is then dressed in crystalline synth work with haunting samples expertly draped throughout. “Why Aren’t You Kneeling?” is at the head of the release, building from a skittering of crickets into a chant-driven sub pusher, channelling tribal house spirits from bygone warehouse raves. “Horizon Drip” is a lean, stripped down drum track, laced with elemental echoes of vintage hardcore, with it’s interspersed breaks and rave sirens. “Effigy” rounds out the EP, with a pulsing broken kick and shattering glass growing into brash militant techno, with razor-edged white noise stabs and heavy 4/4 drums in tow.
